Les Ballet de Monte-Carlo - Mixed Program Altro Canto I and II

Modern Dance Men's Dance for Women by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, Monaco (World Premiere)

Part One: Altro Canto has a wonderful producing team: choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot, costumes by Karl Lagerfeld, set by Rolf Sachs. Compared with Cendrillon, Altro Canto has more space for imagination for the audience, because it has no roles, no narration, even no gender difference. Maillot said, "Altro Canto is special and extraordinary. The dancers are dancing with their hearts in accordance with what they feel about Monteverdi's baroque music. I haven't found music that evoking for long…" The music is about strength and fragility. The dancers express this theme out. With the music flowing up and down, the dancers jump, lie, run or tangle with each other.

What the Altro Canto will bring us is the resonance of sight, hearing and feeling. On Oct.20 will we witness the spiritual dialogue between the artists, musicians and dancers in the Shanghai Grand Theatre. What Les Ballets de Monte Carlo brings us is ultimate beauty and enchanting elegance.

Part Two: Men's Dance for Women, a newly created modern dance by the world top choreographer, Jean-Christophe Maillot, will have the world premiere out of Monaco on Oct.20.in 2009 CSIAF. Maillot has imagined an abstract choreography which is the feminine version from the previous Men's Dance. Maillot's dance brings a soul to each dancer, and also makes it more dramatic. Steve Reich's music offers the dancers a free space to present the aesthetics by their body language concisely and vividly with no exaggerated dressing, no glaring lights and even no varied melodies.
