With a classical European style, He Luting Concert Hall was situated inside Shanghai Conservatory of Music, No. 20 of shady Fenyang Road in Shanghai. The architectural style of the concert hall is steady, tasteful, elegant and stylish. It is in perfect harmony with the style of the neighboring office buildings.

In the hall, the stage is in harmony with the audience section. Without a curtain, it is a professional concert hall for symphony and chamber music, in which all performances are featured by natural sound. Within a building area of 4324 square meters, 537 square meters are attributed to the 14-meter high theater. Characterized by a classical European style, the hall is tall, spacious, light and extraordinarily beautiful. The open stage within the professional concert hall covers an area of 125 square meters, sufficient to accommodate three orchestras performing at the same time. The stage is 14.9 meters wide (including the entrance) and 8.4 meters deep. There are 742 seats in the audience section, including auditorium on the first floor and boxes at both sides of the second floor.

The architectural and acoustic design refers to that of the Golden Hall of Vienna, Boston Symphony Hall, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. All the three are in the shape of a rectangle. In order to reach the international standard of 1.8-second reverberation (intermediate frequency), a large number of special techniques and new materials were committed to designing and constructing the concert hall.

There are a couple of assistant rooms. Specifically, on the first floor, there are rest rooms for distinguished guests, dressing rooms for players, rest rooms for conductors, and storerooms for pianos. On the second floor, there are rooms for symphony rehearsals. On the third floor, there are rooms for folk-music rehearsals. Moreover, there are office rooms on each floor.

After Jean-Marie Charpentier, a French master of architecture, visited He Luting Concert Hall, he commented that it was “very professional and desirable.”

From Sept. 19th, 2003, when He Luting Concert Hall was opened, to the end of 2005, altogether 477 concerts were held there, including 61 in 2003, 188 in 2004 and 228 in 2005. Major performances in 2005 included International Piano Festival of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, the Fifth Concert of Shanghai International Opera Maestro Class, Liszt International Piano Maestro Class, the Third Shanghai International Piano Competition, and 2005 Shanghai International Percussion Week.

Based on the intelligentized and modernized function of the theater, along with the rich music resources of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, He Luting Concert Hall intends to make due contribution to establishing a “Golden Hall” of China, as well as to musical and cultural development of the Chinese nation.
