Shanghai Corporate Joint Pavilion, dubbed the "Magic Cube," has received an avalanche of photographs since a photo competition for the pavilion was launched in July.

A total of 3,355 images had been submitted by late September. A photo showing a cat sitting next to an open window in an old Shikumen (stone-gated) building, which is to be dismantled to make way for the Expo, won the best image for September.

The image submitted by Shanghai native Xi Wenlei, or Xizi as he is called online, reminds people of a bygone age in a nostalgic and tranquil oil-painting-like picture. It leaves the city’s hustle and bustle behind.

Xizi was preceded by the August winner, Li Weimin (dououye online), who won judges' heart again this time with a vivid portrait of an elderly Shanghai citizen sitting in a park, reading a newspaper, but with his head buried in it. Li’s attention to ordinary people was praised.

The winning photos, together with other selected photos contributed by the public, will be featured on LED screens and billboards at various high-traffic department stores, supermarkets and commercial streets, including People's Square, Xintiandi and Zhongshan Park, as well as on touch-screen posters in residential areas and taxis.

Gu Shuhang, president of the pavilion, hoped more residents would participate in the event.

Both professional and shutterbugs can submit images that capture the city of Shanghai, its people, businesses, way of life and culture to the pavilion's official Website (www.expo2010scp.com).

Some of the photos will be used in a seven-minute movie and other exhibitions in the pavilion.

Ten photographs each month will win Expo tickets, while 100 entrants each month will win a creative award of a Lomo camera.
